The Art of Risk-Taking: From Rooftop Parties to DJ Battles
When passion meets community spirit, magic happens. That's the story behind "Beats Over the City," the rooftop event that transformed downtown Bakersfield into a celebration of music, art, and connection. Gordy B and Queen B take us through the behind-the-scenes journey of putting together this ambitious gathering that brought together DJs, vendors, families, and music lovers for an unforgettable day.
"It was a lot of work. It was a lot of stress," Gordy admits, but the overwhelming support from the community made it all worthwhile. From unexpected police visits before the event even began to last-minute venue confusion, the team navigated challenges with grace while keeping their focus on creating something special for Bakersfield. Dos Muchos adds valuable perspective, acknowledging the courage it takes to put your name on an event and seeing it through despite obstacles.
The conversation shifts seamlessly into the world of DJ battles, with Dos sharing captivating stories from his own competitive experiences. His emotional recounting of winning a battle through improvisation when the format suddenly changed reveals the passion beneath the turntables. "I left a piece of my soul out there on that stage," he shares, offering listeners a glimpse into the vulnerability behind the confident DJ persona.
We also get updates on Queen B's flourishing balloon business, Busy Bee Creations, as she prepares for a significant quinceañera featuring creative balloon installations and special "balloon detonators." The episode wraps with plans for the next Beats Over the City event and weekend gigs at local hotspots. Whether you're a DJ, event planner, or simply someone who appreciates community gatherings with heart, this conversation captures the spirit of local culture-building at its most authentic.

Speaker 1:going on y'all.
Speaker 2:We got the Queen B Marion herself over here.
Speaker 3:Hi, hi hi.
Speaker 2:Are we going to talk today? Are we going to be a little?
Speaker 3:bit more active, maybe Talk a little more shit with each other. We'll see.
Speaker 2:Have a little fun with this thing. It's been a while since we all got together. Yeah, it's been a while since the last podcast. I think the biggest thing that we've had going on in our life, or the biggest event that we would want to talk about, is probably our beats over the city yes, that was a lot of fun beats over the city was a lot of fun.
Speaker 2:It was a lot of work. It was a lot of stress there's there's a lot of I. I really feel for people that put on events and stuff.
Speaker 1:Um, I really had no idea man, I you know how it is, man as a DJ we'd be sitting behind the scenes. You know what I mean and that's like. But simply talking about it, I mean in real time man, I got to salute you man Because I know that's a risk going ahead when you put your name out there and be like man, let's do this. And you got to make it happen and I seen a little bit of it, so I know.
Speaker 3:I know yeah.
Speaker 1:Man, it's put like this. I'll tell you me and a couple of DJ partners was talking about it and we was like man, that man took that risk. I was like everybody. You know y'all want to put together something. You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 3:Probably got the you know what I'm saying.
Speaker 1:But you're scared. I was like, but that man did that and I'm like, and you see, that shit that he had to go through today, like that's that shit, that come with it, man, man. So I mean I say that man, salute man for real shit, Like you jumped out there. You know what I mean.
Speaker 3:Like you already you, it definitely was scary.
Speaker 2:It was definitely scary.
Speaker 3:We took a big risk.
Speaker 2:Big risk, big risk, but it was a great tournament, oh yeah.
Speaker 3:I'm sorry, Let me include you too, I know behind every good man, there's a great woman.
Speaker 1:You know what I mean, you know.
Speaker 3:I did all the work right. All you did was play the music.
Speaker 1:Hey, I know, I know, I know.
Speaker 2:But on the real, as far as the event goes it, we had the success that I feel that we had. I was happy with the. I was happy with it. I was very happy with it, um, because of the support that we had. And I'll tell you what early on, I had both you and dynamite both say, hey, I'll dj, I'll go out there, I'm gonna go out there and support, and that was at the beginning. That was, you know, we were talking about this before our last podcast, that we did, um, and we were alluding to the beats over the city and and doing an event and stuff like that but, we got a whole lot of support um we did and it made it.
Speaker 2:That's what made it successful. That's what made it easier than right there. There was a lot of support, a lot of people loved the idea, a lot of people wanted to help out, a lot of people wanted to be involved right and, uh, it was a great thing.
Speaker 1:It was a great thing yeah, man, I got like me personally, like like you know a couple of cats that I know you probably never had met before. You know I'm saying dj partners that came up over there and you know they showed up. You know I'm saying and they met you for the first time and they're just like man, like like that, I like that dude, I'm like man, I'll tell you, man, like you know, I'm sorry people be telling stories about you man hey man, hey you know I don't know.
Speaker 1:I mean, all I know is like man, like hey, you know, you met the, you met the man. You see what's going on.
Speaker 2:Just good vibes and energy.
Speaker 1:And that's where it's about man.
Speaker 2:That's where it starts at, that's where it starts Just a lot of good vibes, a lot of good energy.
Speaker 1:It was a wonderful event.
Speaker 2:A lot of good DJs showed up. Oh man, we had an outpouring of DJs. We had an event that DJs got in free. You're a DJ, you get in free. I don't care, you get in free. It's something to give back to the DJ community. A couple of them hit me up and said hey man, I always wanted to play on a rooftop.
Speaker 1:Man Bro who you telling man. I mean in my mind that's my first. I think that's my first time, I think that's my first I think that's my first time. I think that's my first, oh really that's my first time on a rooftop, real talk real talk it was.
Speaker 2:It was a lot, but we're thinking about running it back next month.
Speaker 2:I suggest you do, I suggest you do yeah, we're gonna change the layout a little bit. We're gonna learn from some of the stuff we did. We're gonna get some porta potties out there, gotcha? Uh, we're going to change the layout. Um, take notes from a lot of people that gave us good feedback, a lot of positive people, a lot of love out there, and and people were were more than happy to say hey, you know what? What did you think about doing this? Or how about this one? On the next one, right? So people were already planning the next one before we even said hey, yeah, we're gonna do another one.
Speaker 1:Hey, hey, gordy, I'm going to be honest with you. I be around a lot of events, okay, and like, if that's what you're talking about right there, if that's the key point right there, then that's good, because you know, trust me, I mean, from what I've seen, I didn't see, I didn't hear nothing bad. I didn't see nothing bad. I mean, with the lack of, I'm still hanging out and everybody had fun. But trust me, man, it could be a lot worse. I've seen.
Speaker 2:You've seen the Fyre Festival?
Speaker 1:Hey, listen, listen, listen. For the least bit of I'm talking about, like, whatever it is, you was feeling, like you was lacking. I've seen people that had that experience, and guess what?
Speaker 3:It could just be one little nitpick and they just sit there and just pull that damn string and try to make you know what I'm saying, try to unravel you, right, right.
Speaker 1:But like I say, man, that shows man it came from a good place, it was a good cause, everybody had a good time. That's why you got the feedback you got bro.
Speaker 2:Yeah, we had a lot of love, a lot of support. We had the oldies out there, the lowriders out there, we had Ritzy's Party Rentals. I'm not even going to try to mention everybody because at this point I'm probably going to forget some names and I don't want to hurt any feelings, but the amount of love, the amount of community, the amount of family, all of those items was incredible. I just want to thank Bakersfield and everybody that came out and showed love and support and shared the post, liked the post, whatever it may be.
Speaker 1:Man, it wasn't nobody. Baby mama showed up and started no shit or nothing, man, everything was just beautiful. It was peaceful. Yeah, it was peaceful, man.
Speaker 3:Wait, wait. The shit started before we even.
Speaker 2:Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, go ahead, go ahead and tell them, babe, tell them.
Speaker 3:You tell them babe.
Speaker 2:All right. So you know, we pull up to the parking garage at designated time 830 or whatever when we told everybody yeah, you can start showing up and setting up your booth and everything. And we roll up, we get up to the parking garage, get up to the top and we're barely about to start unloading and three bpds roll up.
Speaker 1:Three bpds roll up and I'm like oh man, my heart sunk up top.
Speaker 2:Yeah, they drove up top, got you. My heart sunk and I was like I am about to let down over 200 people like 200 people are gonna come.
Speaker 2:They want to come, they signed up to come, they paid to come. You know, whatever it may be and I I'm going to my name, like you said, dose my name is attached to that event Beats Over the City. That's Gordie B, that's Queen B, that's Dose. That's Dynamite, that's, you know, jj. Everybody else that went out there and supported yeah, they showed up, they approached me. They said are you Gordie B?
Speaker 3:I was like hey, I made it in life, man, hey the cops know I'm Gordy B baby Like I made it.
Speaker 1:Hey, I'd have answered that shit faster than a motherfucker. I'd have been a murder, rap to it and everything I'd have been like yep.
Speaker 3:I'm those muchos what's happening.
Speaker 2:They came up there and like yeah, we got some complaints. I'm like how the hell would you receive a complaint when I just literally pulled up here?
Speaker 2:myself right and they said it was from a day or two prior that people had some quote, unquote concerns about the event and I said, hey, this is private property. They rented it to me. I'm using it. It's going to be a community event. There's not going to be any nonsense going on here, bs, we're not selling alcohol, it's just food and arts and crafts and vendors and stuff. It's a community thing. And they were cool, they said okay, man, and they left. But apparently 18th street has a couple parking garages don't going down 18th street and that was quite the debacle because we had a lot of people showing up to the wrong parking garage.
Speaker 1:Okay, so that was the meat of it. Okay, got you. Okay, I sure was about to shoot some shots somewhere. Hey, wrong parking garage. Hey, I was one of those people. I drove up there earlier. I was one of them. I didn't talk to nobody, though, but I drove up there and I seen where the gate was at. Over there, off of 18th Street, I seen some vehicles that were. You know what I'm saying. They're used for other means other than just straight transportation. I was like you know what? This might not be the right spot I know Gordy wouldn't set me up like that man.
Speaker 2:And then, on top of that transportation, I was like you know what, this might not be the right spot right here.
Speaker 1:I know gordy wouldn't set me up like that, and then, on top of that, I don't think these people want a whole bunch of people around their cars, exactly you know what I'm saying, so I was like, okay, there might be. You know, I'm saying I had to figure it out, but we got to figure. So, okay, I'm glad to hear that that's what the?
Speaker 3:that's what the case was that's a new thing. Right because? Right, Because the city didn't use it before.
Speaker 1:Yeah, no, no, I've never seen that before. I have never seen it before. But now when I go by there and I look at that roof, I'm like huh it's always full. Yeah, I'm like, okay, I see y'all, I see where you guys are parking all your stuff at. I got you okay, and it's from what you see the response time on the individuals trying to approach this area is going to be rectified very soon.
Speaker 2:You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 1:Real soon, if they have to deal with this again. I got you.
Speaker 2:I got you, gordon. You are not going to have a block party in this city. High rise parking lot.
Speaker 1:They said not at our spot, not over here. You might want to direct them somewhere else brother, you can't be over here.
Speaker 2:So I feel bad because I think some people at that other location had to stay there to tell everybody as they came up there. So I basically wasted some city workers' hours for a while through that mishap of communication, I think, and he or she had to redirect traffic to the correct parking garage.
Speaker 1:Well, you know what? I gave you your salute already, but guess what? That's the real MVP right there, Whoever you are out there. But guess what? That's the real MVP right there, whoever you are out there. We apologize for dealing with repeating the same thing over and over again, having to explain and point and give out addresses and stuff, but thank you very much. You helped this thing go down, you know what I mean.
Speaker 2:Yes, yes, thank you. Thank you for your service. The talks that went out were very nice. Yeah, they were. They gave us stickers, badges for our girls, for kids that were going to be there. Salida, salida with Rolls Royce, closet Rolls Royce. She was going to be one of the vendors. I have to give her a major shout out too, because she wasn't able to make it. I think they had a loss in their family. Family emergency able to make it. I think they had a loss in their family.
Speaker 2:But she still came and dropped off bags of toys.
Speaker 1:That's what's up.
Speaker 2:And we were able to give all of those toys out to those kids that were out there. So I thank her. Yes, thank you. I believe it was Salita James. I believe Rolls Royce Closets or Rolls Royce Boutique.
Speaker 1:Hey, hey, listen man. I'm just sitting here thinking about it. I'm just sitting here thinking about that day right there, man, that was a damn good vibe, man. I know you guys are probably busy and stuff, man, but me just walking around and just Everybody was having a good time, super chill. Yeah man for real. Yeah, a good time, super chill, yeah, man.
Speaker 2:For real. Yeah, as chill as it could get, that event was very, very chill. We had a couple people out there rapping, putting out their music and supporting local Bakersfield artists. Overall, very, very, very happy with it and we are thinking about running it back next month and that's probably gonna happen?
Speaker 1:did you get on?
Speaker 2:I didn't.
Speaker 1:I didn't think so you better get all on that.
Speaker 2:I'm gonna get on yeah, I'm gonna get on on the next one for sure, I will. Yeah, I will, man, I, I was running around everything and you know what I? I hadn't eaten in two days, I think.
Speaker 1:I?
Speaker 2:I understand that I hadn't eaten in like two days and then, uh, I started cramping up and doing all kinds of crazy stuff. My body was not happy with me, man, so people were trying to give me drinks and juice and all kinds of shit. I was laying back there on the ground behind the dj booth for a little while, man, I'm sitting here.
Speaker 1:I'm just sitting here right now, putting myself in that situation like like two days you know what I'm saying Like Friday and it's going down Sunday and I'm just like I'm thinking to myself like oh, wee, oh, my God.
Speaker 2:Did we have an event the day before? I think we did. We had some kind of oh, was it Havana the day before Something. We had a big event on Saturday. I don't remember what the event was, but we had a large event Saturday, the day before. And this is going to sound funny and probably too much information, but I don't really drink or eat too much when I'm in a DJ Understandable. I don't want to be in that position or that feeling of like, oh shit, let me put Rapper's Delight on for seven minutes and go run to the bathroom real quick, man.
Speaker 1:My mind's knee deep.
Speaker 2:Oh man, hey Dose, what's your bathroom song.
Speaker 1:Knee Deep Parliament, 16 minutes baby.
Speaker 2:Hey, that will buy you some time, bubba. Everybody tells me hey, just do a, you know, record yourself, record a mix of yourself or whatever else, and just play a mix. I don't really like doing that, for some reason.
Speaker 1:Well, I'll put it to you like this I mean I do be having mixes. I understand what you're saying because, trust me, I didn't put a mix on and then I'll come back out and I'll be like damn things, I hear jamming to this right now. You know what I'm saying and I'm like this is my mix, but like I could be doing this, or I played this song earlier, like I feel a little slighted you know what I'm saying, so. I mean it's a personal thing with me same but, I, hear where you're coming from.
Speaker 1:It's I'm getting at is that, like the mix ain't never gonna be able to uh replicate being able to handle that business in real the energy of real time, yeah, and I'm and I'm, I'm a real time person, so yeah, yeah, yeah so so basically, if you're a mix, that means it's dead. You walked in there. You probably like the only person in there, so yeah what else?
Speaker 2:uh, oh, we had that. We got other big news. I forgot all about it, but we got the uh, the addicted to vinyl. Derrick b sick mixes new uh dj magazine that he just came out with. He, uh, he got me several copies. I have a. I have a box full of them in the bedroom.
Speaker 1:Um dose got his last week I don't even know why he brought that up right now like like, hey, I'll be I to be honest with you, I'm going to be honest with you, I have not even opened it up yet.
Speaker 1:Okay, I looked at it and I probably showed, like my kids, but like I have not looked at it myself because, like I told you, I don't want to look at it because I want to start crying Get emotional Like, oh, man gonna cry because like, like I don't know if I said it when I talked to you before, but man, like, like, when I was young and shit, I used to like read all these hip-hop magazines and stuff, like it was always my goal just to, just to see my name up in there. You know what I'm saying. So, like you mentioning me, and I see that as it's like it was like, man you don't understand.
Speaker 1:Like I said, that's it like I said it wasn't about no interview with me, or wasn't about not interviewing me or I did some extravagant stuff. It was just to see my name in print because I'm old.
Speaker 3:I don't need to see it on. Like I said, when you see it on a magazine.
Speaker 1:On paper it's different.
Speaker 2:It is, it's different.
Speaker 1:It's not like just getting on the Internet looking at. You know what I'm saying. Anybody can type something up there, man. But when this thing then went to the print and press and had everything the color key and everything- on there and your name is in there to where this is mass produced. It's a different thing. So that's why, yeah, like I said before, I do look at it and cry and post all this stuff.
Speaker 3:I'll say all the deep shit.
Speaker 1:I'm going to let you know right here on the show, right now on the most dope podcast right now I'm telling you man Thank you bro.
Speaker 2:Hey man, the shit's no fun if you can't bring people with you. Man.
Speaker 3:Man who you telling? Man, we don't know where we're going, right, we don't know where we're going to be.
Speaker 2:Hey next, hey, hey, Swanky Place.
Speaker 1:No, no, no. Shout out to Swanky Place. I sent you on the page, man. My boy, tom, tom and Rudy. They was up in there last, you know, a couple weeks ago. In there, you know what I'm saying Rocking, you know what I'm saying. I sent y'all man Y, you know what I'm saying. My boy, you know what I'm saying. He's talking about it. You know what I'm saying. I need to slide up in there, so I'm going to be at y'all. You know what I mean. We going to be at y'all.
Speaker 2:So Hashtag swanky place.
Speaker 1:Swanky place, you know what I'm saying. Yuma, arizona, you know what I'm saying. Right across Cat, a corner from the McDonald's Y. You and Arizona know what it is when I pull into town. I mean I try.
Speaker 2:Hey, at the real Dos Muchos.
Speaker 1:Like I said, I try, I try, y'all I try. You might not like what I'm doing, but I try.
Speaker 2:Swanky Place. Hit my boy up at the real Dos Muchos.
Speaker 1:Yep and shout out once again. You know what I'm saying to Rude and TJ Tom Tom.
Speaker 2:Swanky place huh.
Speaker 1:Swanky place.
Speaker 2:Swanky place. How was it, man Huh? How was it? How was it over there?
Speaker 1:Oh, I mean, I just seen it on videos. I haven't been over there personally myself. My boy was over there rocking man and I seen what was going on over there, man, you know what I'm saying Real nice, classy place. Looked pretty official huh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's official, they got screens.
Speaker 2:Looked like the movie clubs.
Speaker 1:Bingo. This look like the movies I ain't never seen a club like this.
Speaker 2:This look like something straight out the movies.
Speaker 1:You know what I'm saying. I think I seen the bartender flip the bottle once or twice.
Speaker 2:Oh man, he lit the bar on fire, did all kinds of shit, 20 shots at once.
Speaker 1:Yeah, man, you know what I'm saying. Seen three girls barfing in the hallway. It's going down, oh man.
Speaker 2:Hey, gordy B will head out there with Dos Muchos, we'll do a double set out there.
Speaker 1:Hey, man, please do, man, please do, please do.
Speaker 2:And then we're going to cross the border to San Luis, oh, ah.
Speaker 1:Hey, I don't know, man, I find that you know what I'm saying. Like you know, I didn't know the stories I was telling you earlier. I didn got to understand the DJ booths over there. They got real DJ booths, like you know, like upstairs and doors and shit. You ain't, ain't, no access yeah. You know, you know we're just walking over here. You don't say with your phone in this man.
Speaker 2:They have to hold their phone up in bold letters. We don't big type.
Speaker 1:They play this man phone. They better bring the flat screen. They're way away, I can't see you. They may have a flat screen hooked up to the apple play. Go ahead, slide right over there. You know what I'm saying? Right, go slide over there to your notes and go ahead and type that in there. Try to blow it up, because that's the only. Yeah, it's way up there, they way up there oh man, your boy was spinning over there.
Speaker 1:Yeah, no, he, no, he, over at the swanky place. My boy was over there, uh, spinning. He said they was over there. Yeah, no, over at the Swanky place. My boy was over there spinning. He said they was over there trying to prop up a DJ battle over there. That's what caught my attention. Oh, really, yeah, they said they was trying to have a DJ battle, him and my boy, and I was just like oh, y'all over there battling, I was like I got a winner.
Speaker 1:He was like nah, he was like they was over there trying to make us run that, but we didn't want to run that. They was like we's over here rocking. You know what I'm saying. You know how it is man, we out here, so you know, for the most part they just like well, you know, and that's my boy, so he's like man, you need to slide up in here. You know what I mean and you know what it is. You know I mean it's this town.
Speaker 3:You know I'm like and I'm like where is?
Speaker 1:this at and he was just telling me, like man, it's a new spot out here, it's jumping out here. You know, I'm saying I'm like, okay, let me see what's going on so, hey, we need something like that.
Speaker 2:You know it's like beach of the city, right, right, I got next see, see, but see, this is another thing, like see that that's something like what you're talking about right there, like you said.
Speaker 1:You said beats over the city and I'm putting this out there. Man, you need to link up with my boy Rude, the one I was talking about, my boy Rudy, man, y'all would link up real good. Y'all like the same type of vibe bro, Real talk bro.
Speaker 2:Is he the one you wanted to get on the podcast?
Speaker 1:No, no, no, that's my boy 6P. That's my boy out in LA. This is his cat Out here, man, he come from the same vein as you Real talk. The one time he'd be putting on these shows and stuff, he'd had Planet Asia out there, he'd had Devin the Dude out there. There's a lot of shows out there, but Devin the Dude, that was man, that was a vibe.
Speaker 1:Right there, bro, there was a DJ battle. I still tell my boys to this day. I'm like, bro, you don't understand. I was like the man devil was in our city and he was right here. You know what I'm saying? Right here, the spot that it was at, there was a bar next to it and next to the bar it was right next to a bar and they had a patio out in the back. A couple of people that, uh, told me after that show. They was like look, bro. They said I tried to get tickets for the show. He said I couldn't swing it, okay, so guess what I did? He said I just bought fucking beer all day over at the bar he's like, because the patio was right there next door and I'm telling you, like the patio is next to the stage.
Speaker 1:He's like all I do is just stand up and look and I'm watching the whole show right there. You know what I'm saying. But it was, but it was, the place was. The place was packed. Bro, like, and like I'm saying my boy uh, you don't say my boy rude man, like you know he put that on. Like you know, like, like he, like you, like how you like the beats over the city, like that was something that you wanted to do.
Speaker 1:Yeah, the devon dude show, that was something that's like, that's somebody I want to have down here and I have the opportunity to bring him down here to make it happen and then make it happen. You know, I'm saying and and he, he, just he, just like he a DJ, he's like he a music lover. But he had he, but he a DJ, don't get, don't get twisted, but in the same token, like he, he loved, he loved his music. You know I'm saying like, you know he building his vinyl collection.
Speaker 3:Just like you know I'm saying like you like y'all, you, y'all, y, y'all got the same person.
Speaker 1:If I showed you a picture of him right now. The only difference is is that you know what I'm saying, like you know what I mean, like you know what I'm saying, like you know you, uh, put like this, y'all, y'all, make the connection on the beard.
Speaker 2:All right.
Speaker 1:Y'all, beard game is on par, you know what I and he on top of his MMA shit.
Speaker 2:Oh yeah, y'all talking the same. Real talk, same people, real talk. What's the typical in your experience, man, or your career as a DJ and watching DJ battles and turntable battles and everything else, what's the typical format? What is the format for a dj battle? So you know, you have, you have 10 people that sign up, right, and you just you randomly put them in like a final, like a final four tier or something, and you have them go up against each other until it's the last two and then award. But how long does it go on, man?
Speaker 1:you go five minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes it depends, like like the, the battle I went in and I think it was like, I think we were like one minute, I think it was like I want to say it was like one minute, maybe two, but the point being, you know, and that's one thing about my boy Rudy, like it probably was one minute, but he knew the vibe, so he's like you know what, go ahead, get loose.
Speaker 2:All right, then it's time to stop Sneak some extra in.
Speaker 1:It's time to stop. I'm gonna let you go for the sake of hip hop, but we gonna stop right now. So anyway, but normally it depends almost how valid it is, like as far as the minutes goes, like, and it also, like I said, that's a big point of it is the type of battle like, say, for instance, like a DMC battle. Okay, like I don't know, I'm not, I'm saying like I can't, you know, I'm saying don't quote me on it, not verbatim.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, but but it's more of a sense of okay, let's, you know, I'm saying let's get your skills in here, let's see where your turntablism is at okay, all right, but then you'll have because that's dmc, that's one of the oldest, you know, I'm saying battling- the original yeah yeah, you know tournaments around, but then you got the other ones where they may incorporate different things.
Speaker 2:It could be wordplay or something right like the last one, like the last one I watched.
Speaker 1:You know, I'm saying when that boy at devon hype one, like like each cat or each each round was something different and it was like at the same minute, like two minutes, but each one was something different, like okay, like boom, round one. We want to see you go ahead. You know, I'm saying let's see your turntable is bam, second round? Might have been the word play Third round. That would have been like okay, let's see you party rock.
Speaker 2:You know, what I'm saying you know what I mean.
Speaker 1:Like let's play the jams and then the last one might have been you know what I mean. Whatever, you know what I mean, let's just go all in. It all depends on the thing.
Speaker 2:But if you had to ask me if I was putting one one together, I've like I'd say, I'd say about, I'd say, two minutes and we would just have a panel of judges, right, like how many judges you think?
Speaker 1:we were three, three judges.
Speaker 2:We'll have it have to be an uneven number yeah, and then at that point I give dose of 9.5 in tablism. I give them a 8.3 in wordplay or whatever the hell we're talking about, right, right, whatever we break it up into each round and then at the very end we have we have a, we have a winner, right, right.
Speaker 1:But we could also possibly go in and do like sub winners, a wordplay winner, right okay, tablism winner right, right, and then the overall winner right, right, see, see if it was, if I was gonna put together something like that. I would do it to more point to where, like like what you're saying right there, it depends on how many people are off in the event.
Speaker 1:So if we got 10, if you say there's 10, okay, a nice even number then yeah, I would probably pick three rounds and let the best of three it's just like the NBA finals Give you the best of three and then boom. You know what I'm saying? Well, not the NBA finals, but like Tennis.
Speaker 1:Yeah, tennis three. And then boom, you know, I'm saying let you. You know, I'm saying I mean we're not the nba finals, but like tennis yeah, tennis right, yeah, yeah, but like I'll let you go ahead. You know, I'm saying give you an odd number, the best out of that odd number, bam okay, and then we go on and then probably at the end that might be where I might stretch it out a little bit longer you know I'm saying, but I might like the first, the first, uh few rounds.
Speaker 1:I might just incorporate all that like within that two minutes, like let's see what you know I mean give us what you got within that two minutes. You know I'm saying of all this. If you can, All right. And then bam. Well, you know, I mean just give it your hottest shit. And then bam, Then once you get to that, that a higher level than you are, you know, if you what you got there and you, if you plan for this, then OK, Ultimately then you're going to be ready for yeah.
Speaker 1:OK, you got. You got something laid out already, yeah, which goes into my battle. Like I said, I thought it was going to be two rounds, okay, and then, like the third round, I thought it was going to be like they was going to play a beat and then we was just going to scratch it with a beat.
Speaker 2:I had a whole other motherfucking routine ready for round three, and you weren't ready.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I'm the first Because they flipped the coin. Okay, this video, there we go. This video okay. And you see, I dropped the beat and they was like and I'm like, wait, wait, ain't we gonna go back and forth? And they were like no, bro, like you gotta hold another third round. I'm like what? And I was like in this video you hear everything I'm talking about. And they're like I was like fuck it, let's go.
Speaker 2:Freestyle.
Speaker 1:Freestyle. I caught the Holy Ghost on that oh man you were possessed, man, I was, bro, I'll be honest with you. When I got done and I won that shit, bro, my boy Ayo will tell you, man, I was off to the side of the fucking stage. I was crying, bro.
Speaker 3:I was like bro, you don't understand I left a piece of my fucking soul out there on that fucking stage right now trying to hold on.
Speaker 1:That's badass man Like real shit.
Speaker 3:So you guys go in cold turkey. They don't send you a beat.
Speaker 1:No, no, no. Normally in most DJ battles it won't be cold turkey. If I put it in perspective, it's almost like a dunk contest.
Speaker 3:You watch a slam dunk contest, nba dunk contest, it's.
Speaker 2:you know what I mean.
Speaker 1:Like you're like okay, this is round one. I might need to do this to get out of round one, okay, okay, this is my best shift.
Speaker 2:I'm going to do a double pump for round one. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you know what I'm saying Round two.
Speaker 1:I round. That's when I double clutch. You know, that's when I call my school high school teacher nigga, and my motherfucking little brother to get on his shoulders, to go ahead and jump over this motherfucker. That's when all that shit come in and play, and that's what I was saying about that third round is like I didn't have nothing, like I just thought that we was gonna go ahead and go back, and I was, you know. And then there's like nah, and I'm like all right, man, and and and luckily the song that I dropped, like I told, my boy when I won.
Speaker 1:I said listen bro. I said I understand there are some technicalities, but the point being is that the only way I said I was like you killed that shit, I was like he ate me up.
Speaker 3:But the only reason why.
Speaker 1:I feel like I won is because of the song, that I had the way that the song flowed, All right, had the way that the song flowed, and then there's certain points to where I was able to accentuate what I was doing, and that's other than that. You know what I'm saying. I felt like you know what I mean. I'm satisfied with my, I'm thankful for my win, but I'm not satisfied. He needed another. I need to give that man another one Because he was basically what it was.
Speaker 1:One of the turntables was slower than the other one.
Speaker 3:Oh, okay, and I understand that.
Speaker 2:That could have been me. Yeah, you know what I'm saying. But then again I would have done the same shit I did, yeah, but then again, I am me. I'm still a ghost.
Speaker 1:I'm going to work. You know what I mean. No, no, but guess what?
Speaker 3:But I'll be honest with you.
Speaker 1:I've been in two battles since then, and guess what?
Speaker 2:I ain't won neither one of them. Two battles since then, not going to win them all, man, yeah, exactly, but did you learn something from them?
Speaker 3:Oh yeah.
Speaker 2:See you win then, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's a win baby. Yeah, yeah, I position, I give up, I'm not gonna dj again.
Speaker 1:And it came in the heart of stuff than that so what else we got going on?
Speaker 2:we you've had, uh, you've had quite, you've been quite the busy girl with busy bee creations. Yeah, quite the busy girl. Yeah, you, um, how many, uh, how many arrangements have you done in the last month or two, six, eight?
Speaker 3:Yeah, I've done about eight. I've done about eight balloon arrangements, photo booth, drop-offs, pickups, I mean it's been crazy.
Speaker 2:LEDs, backdrops, photo booths.
Speaker 3:Balloons.
Speaker 2:Balloons and we have a huge quince coming up, yes, huge quince coming up, where we are doing everything.
Speaker 3:Yeah.
Speaker 2:Except what there's a floral vendor.
Speaker 3:Yeah.
Speaker 2:Okay, yeah, but as far as everything else, you're handling all of that.
Speaker 3:Yes.
Speaker 2:All the decor, all the arches, all the balloons, everything. Make sure everything runs smooth, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3:And then, you know, hired you to be the DJ. You know.
Speaker 2:That's going to be an emotional day for that family it is.
Speaker 3:It is A lot's been going on um, and we've we've tried to be there for them as much as we can yeah um, take a lot of weight off their shoulders as much as we can.
Speaker 2:I mean, they're going through a lot. We're not going to divulge any of their information, but if you can think about the worst thing in your life that's happening right now, uh, multiply it by three. They are that far in.
Speaker 3:They're great. They're great humans. They do a lot. They do a lot and they've been amazing.
Speaker 2:Well, I think, as much as they've been doing, as much as they've been going through, us going through and you know a couple visits, took a couple visits and sat down with them. We've had a few, you know, speaker phone calls. You know We've had all of the planning with the quincesey, all the special dances. Uh, we did their mix, ilflo helped me out with uh serato studio and oh, okay, yeah, I guess I gotta get into that too. Now, man, you know it's funny, you see them memes as a dj and they say, hey, if you want to be a dj, you have to be a social media person. Uh, you know, uh, you have to have, uh, you have to do everything, yeah. Or just simply, as a business owner, you have to be a jack of all trades and djs have to create their own flyers.
Speaker 2:Djs have to promote the events. You know assuming somebody's you know telling you I'm a DJ brother, I'm not a promoter but see, that's why you put your own events on brother yeah, you know what I'm saying, because then you then you can do what you want to do, just like me.
Speaker 1:Like this past week, they gave me an opportunity to finally name one of my events that I've always wanted to name it, which is party at your baby mama.
Speaker 3:I was finally able to do that. You don't understand how happy I am.
Speaker 1:You know what I'm saying you can't just throw that out in front of a business, you know, because you're going to hear a no. You're going to hear a no, but this particular one, they were like you know what, yeah go ahead and run that.
Speaker 3:I'm like pssh, let's go, let's go, let's run that.
Speaker 1:Man, you, you're going to watch that it's going to attract some people.
Speaker 2:So your balloon. You've done about eight to ten different balloon walls this last month. We've had I don't know five to eight photo booths go out this last month. But, like I said, we got this big quince. It's going to have a complete balloon wall. It's going to have arches. It's going to have quarter arches, half arches.
Speaker 3:Marquise letters with balloons it's going to have arches.
Speaker 2:It's going to have quarter arches, half arches. Marquee's letters with balloons it's going to be. Oh and we are going to break out the balloon detonators. Yes, yeah, what the hell? Yeah, we got these balloon detonators, man, and what you do is you fill up a big balloon with regular air right, and a whole bunch of balloons inside of it with helium. So we put these little, these little whatever they are, these detonators, you tape them to the balloon and they have a.
Speaker 2:They have a key fob, right okay, you know like an alarm right and you can sync them up so you can have like eight of them and you hit the button and pop. All eight of them pop and then these balloons go floating up into the air. Okay, it's just uh no, that sounds dope.
Speaker 1:I just I just thought I, I just went back into it. I I sorry, hey, listen, listen, I I know we talk, I know we talk about your balloon stuff, okay, so I'm just saying I gotta let you know when you start talking about the balloon inside the balloon. Okay, and all my friends remember this. Okay, I remember this one time I was over here it was Valentine's Day and my homeboy, my homeboy Andre, this dude looked like an old dog from motherfucking Men's Society.
Speaker 2:I mean they should have.
Speaker 3:Okay, but.
Speaker 1:Men's Society ain't came out yet okay, I just wanted to just give you a little. Okay, I remember it was Valentine's Day and we're in 7th grade and I remember I'm walking home and this motherfucker had like he had a gang of balloons and I remember he had a balloon and it had I want to say it was another balloon inside of it, that's why you said that and it had a bear, but the bear was big A stuffed balloon.
Speaker 1:I remember I seen that he walking down the street with this motherfucker and I was just like look at this nigga.
Speaker 3:I was like, and I got a girlfriend. I got a girlfriend and I ain't had it. I got my shit on Sunday, but on Valentine's- Day, but at school that's the public display.
Speaker 1:You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 3:I was just like man.
Speaker 2:I don't know if you see my eyes. Somebody got that for him for Valentine's Day yeah.
Speaker 1:At school.
Speaker 2:A girl got that for him.
Speaker 1:The girl lived next door to him too.
Speaker 2:Oh, They've been doing stuff, man what about the candy grams guys.
Speaker 3:Oh see, you know what?
Speaker 1:You know what? I sent a candy gram to my, the raspberry motherfucking, the charm sucker. You know what I'm saying? That blue one, that blue raspberry.
Speaker 3:Yeah, you know what?
Speaker 1:I'm saying With a little you know what I'm saying With a little note on it. I went ahead and bought one of them for my girl. I don't even remember if she got one. I think I got one because I remember eating one that day. But bottom line. It was a tough weekend.
Speaker 2:I forgot about that.
Speaker 1:But let me just get this out the way. I'm sorry, let me just get it out the way. Okay, I was at his house earlier that day, like on Sunday, and I just remember I was like because he lived around the corner from me. So I was like, okay, I'm just going to go home. Okay, boom. So I went back to my house. You know what I'm saying. I go home, I come back and I go back over to his house and he's got some. I see some balloons tied to his bed. You know what I'm saying? Some more balloons. I'm like, god damn, I'm like man. You got some more balloons and shit, he was like man, it's like none of them man.
Speaker 3:We're like, oh shit, when he said these.
Speaker 1:I'm like no, they're yours. I'm like no, I don't want your balloons.
Speaker 2:Don't be trying to give me your balloons, man. I don't want your pity balloons, right, right, you want goddamn pity balloons. I'm trying to tell you.
Speaker 1:I came right in his house. I walked right in his room. He was in the living room and I just opened up his room. I don't know what I went in there for. I just opened up. I'm like you got some more balloons. He's like no, they're yours. And I'm like I want your balloons. He's like no, he's like Concha came by here and brought them to you.
Speaker 3:He's like I don't want your balloons.
Speaker 2:You can keep your fucking balloons, man.
Speaker 1:Yeah, he said, yeah, he said he said he said Concha came by here and brought them in. You know what I'm saying? Concha, Concha's daddy was mean, so she came by. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2:That meant something special man. Her daddy was mean on top of it. Yeah man. So, Kinse, what else do we got going on the comedy show? We had the comedy show this last weekend. Dos, where were you at? You were at Señor Pepe's this past.
Speaker 3:Saturday no it was like two Saturdays ago.
Speaker 1:Yeah, the Saturday before last year I was at Señor Pepe's.
Speaker 3:How was?
Speaker 2:that man.
Speaker 1:It was dope man. That was a fun party over there. And then I think no, I didn't DJ that day. I pulled up on my. It was dope man. That was a fun party over there. Boy, that was my boy. And then I think no, I didn't DJ that day, I pulled up on my boy. But yeah, man, I went over there and did that man, it was good.
Speaker 1:You know what I mean. Like I said, 70th birthday man. They tried to swing me into the ratchet stuff, but there was a contingent in there that was a little too strong. You know what I'm saying. It was like, hey, you know what? Nah, man, we're going. You know what I'm saying go ahead run that old school back. You know what I'm saying?
Speaker 2:like yeah, I'm like say nothing oh yeah, hey, I'm with you on that one, and it was like run that, run that tower of power.
Speaker 1:I'm like I know where y'all want to go.
Speaker 2:Now I got, I got y'all that's why I don't mind requests and stuff. You know, a lot of djs have this stigma and, like you know, fuck requests and all this stuff. Hey man, help me out.
Speaker 1:I agree with that, but this is my line. Okay, Is this? Okay, you want to come? I'll play a song, but when you come back up here twice, I'm going to need some money or a beer. Yeah, I'm going to need something else. You know what I'm saying Cause I'm not up here working for you. You know what I'm saying For free. I don't know what you told. I don't know if you told your girls. When you went back over there and I played your song, you was over there like girl. I told you.
Speaker 2:I just don't like the jukebox requests where the person keeps coming five, seven requests in. Just how about this? How about this? How about this, how about this? It's like no man. I mean, how about you? Let me do my job for a little bit and see if, within the next 10 songs, I play one of those, because probably going to within the next 10 songs, whatever you're coming up here to request, I'm probably already queued up. I already have it in my prepare folder. Whatever it may be, I'm already gonna play it.
Speaker 1:See, I'm just not there bpm or key, yet I'm not there yet, but let me tell you know something you gotta watch something out for them people about them birthdays man, you might want to ask for an idea, something.
Speaker 2:They be lying sometimes, you know oh, and they just want the birthday shout out, they want some attention, attention.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, they be lying sometimes.
Speaker 2:I caught one of them. I was like Was it at Santi's?
Speaker 1:No, okay, no, all these Santi's alone y'all.
Speaker 2:Hey, I'm going to swing by Santi's either tomorrow or Friday, or both. I'm going to come hang out with you, man, you better after this episode. You already said it, episode. You already said it I'm going to give back, man, I'm going to give back. No, no, no.
Speaker 1:It wasn't over there. It was over there, it was somewhere else.
Speaker 2:He's not going to name McMurphy's over there.
Speaker 1:This boy good. As a matter of fact, that's exactly where it was he good.
Speaker 3:And this was years ago.
Speaker 1:No but no, I seen somebody Work that, work that when I was like, oh, I was like that's good, but not me.
Speaker 2:So that's why I'm putting that out and you know what? I don't think restaurants Really check either, so you could really go get Like a free Like what a Sunday, or a free dessert At every place you go, just by quote unquote Lying and saying it's my birthday, damn right, because they don't check and guess what man, this white-lipped motherfucker.
Speaker 1:I know he did that at a restaurant. I know he ran that motherfucker already.
Speaker 3:Oh man you know I don't like it when we go to the restaurant and they ask you are you here celebrating something? Because they think that you're just going to celebrate your anniversary, or you're not going to celebrate your anniversary, or you can't just go to go, you know man.
Speaker 1:I, I, I, me personally, I have not got to ask that before yeah, yeah, are we celebrating.
Speaker 3:Yeah, like are we like if you go to like to a fancy restaurant but I'm talking about okay, okay, Now.
Speaker 1:now, I know what you're talking about Now?
Speaker 2:that's why I don't know what you're talking about. Chop it. I'm going to Taco Bell, god damn it. What do you mean? Fancy, Did they ask?
Speaker 1:you that shit? Yeah, yeah, like, hey, I know what you're talking about.
Speaker 3:Like, hey, yeah, you know, Are you guys out celebrating something, something?
Speaker 2:I think when we went to Hungry Hunter they asked us that.
Speaker 1:Where's Hungry?
Speaker 2:Hunter at Right next to Costco on Rosedale Highway. Okay, yeah, I know what you're talking about Little steakhouse, I know what Hungry Hunter is. I know what it is.
Speaker 1:I ain't been there before. Let's go. They have one out there in Yuma and I wanted to always go to that one man man please man, I got you. All I need is a steak and a salad.
Speaker 2:But how about this man? Everybody that I talk to gets on me about this. I've never been to Luigi's. What the fuck is Luigi's See?
Speaker 3:You've never been to Luigi's.
Speaker 2:I've never been to Luigi's. What's Luigi's? It's downtown, it's on.
Speaker 1:Indian Street, I think it's an Italian restaurant. I don't know. I've never heard of that.
Speaker 2:Is it Italian?
Speaker 3:Yeah.
Speaker 2:Luigi's. Yeah, it's Luigi, I mean Luigi could be. Spaniard or something couldn't he?
Speaker 3:Mario and Luigi are Italian.
Speaker 1:It's Cantonese food boy.
Speaker 3:It's Cantonese boy, it's not Chinese man, it's Cantonese. No, but yeah, I don't really like it because it's so crowded. I don't like going places where it's so crowded, where Luigi's oh.
Speaker 2:I've never been there, but apparently a lot of like. Well, from what I see, I got to be careful with what I say, man, it seems like a lot of business professionals go there. And I just don't necessarily know that I fit in or would feel comfortable in the atmosphere. Got you.
Speaker 3:Well, I'm a realtor, so a lot of realtors go there. Okay, I hear what you're saying.
Speaker 1:So if I go in there I better wear. I got to wear my all white suit and stuff.
Speaker 2:Yeah, you might want to wear some khakis or something, man.
Speaker 1:I got to go in there with some khakis. You know what I'm saying. I might want to have a little bit of my do-rag and go in there.
Speaker 2:Fucking Dose is going to go in there and some corduroys.
Speaker 1:Have my do-rag on and some sunflower seeds, some bell bottoms or something. And they're shaking my sunflower seeds like. You know what I'm saying. I just eat at the bar, Fuck it.
Speaker 3:Like you know, like the pajama party, that only Dose participated in.
Speaker 1:Oh man Like uh-huh. Like what the hell.
Speaker 2:you mean by my birthday. Jesus Christ man, oh man, oh man, oh shit. So Santee's tomorrow and Friday, huh.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I got Santee's tomorrow and Friday this week. Usually I'm there Friday, more likely Saturday. You know what I'm saying. I'll be trying to throw a Friday to somebody. Even my DJ partner's there, you know what I'm saying. Want to come down here to Bakersfield, california? You know what I'm saying. Let me know. You know what I'm saying. I'll toss you a Friday if you can handle it.
Speaker 2:Dose man, you have the memory of an elephant man and you talk like a goddamn radio host. I know.
Speaker 1:Hey, that's why everybody see, that's why I go the extra mile to show y'all that I'm a. It sound like a whole bunch of drag. So I just be like, hey, wait, hold on nigga. Yeah, I'm calling you back, nigga. I meant what I said.
Speaker 2:I guess people don't man. People say, yeah, I'll call you back. They ain't never call you back, man.
Speaker 1:I'm calling you back. I'm like hey, man, remember what I said. I said, dude, you was talking about, you was trying.
Speaker 2:Well, I'm gonna go by tomorrow, man, I'm gonna go by tomorrow, I'm gonna squeeze in.

Speaker 1:Oh, is that right? You're just going to come in here and flex in front of me, knowing I got to do a quince on Saturday.
Speaker 2:You got a quince.
Speaker 1:Saturday too, man, I got a quince on Saturday, you guys are going to come over there and get all loose with it in front of me the day before, and I'm trying to pass this off to you right now.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I get to go home, I get to rest and sleep all night.
Speaker 1:Dose is going to be up till 2 am with women fighting in the parking lot man, yep, and motherfuckers on my phone over here motherfucking texting me talking about this is what they saw and they want to hear, and this, this and that. You know what I mean, can they? Yeah, you know, hey, but hey, that's the struggles of a DJ. You know what I'm saying? I ain't talk about nothing. Everybody else out here ain't never had to deal with yeah.
Speaker 2:All right. Well, we're going to go ahead and wrap this episode of the Most Dope Podcast up. We're about 48 minutes in. I think it's probably episode number 11 or so, and Dose has been on probably half of them. I appreciate you always supporting and coming out.
Speaker 1:man, I've been on nine. No, I'm playing.
Speaker 2:Actually, Gordon, I've been on eight.
Speaker 1:No, no, no, it's like this. You know what? It's probably like the fourth? Yeah, you know what. This is the fourth. Okay, this is the fourth, yeah.
Speaker 2:And it's always been good times. We have dinner, we have drinks, we hang out, we play music and just chill. But anyways, we're going to let you guys go. Thank you everybody for joining and we'll talk to you soon.
