SPEAKER_07I was on, oh, I was. I was like, what? This motherfucker's on TikTok. I was. I know that guy. I heard him on the radio. I hear him on the radio, man, but that radio station, man, no, no, no shade to the radio station, but that radio station fooled the shit out of me, man, because I was leaving an event one night and it said uh on the ones and twos with DJ Myth. And I got real excited. Real excited, because that's my boy. I I sit here across from the table from him. I get to DJ with him, get to call him my friend, get to call him my family. And this motherfucker's on the radio, man. That's nothing to sneeze at, right? Uh, you know, so I'm driving to the hard rock to go to my gig and I'm listening, I'm rocking out with Myth, and I'm like, okay, I like it. I like it. Uh the radio was on the next day, and there was some different shit on. The fucking music was different. It was different. I was like, hey, I don't listen to this shit, man. Like, but I was happy when I heard the myth stuff, right?

SPEAKER_07I have never actually stepped foot into Stellas. My mom and my dad once owned businesses on Niles next to the Burger King and Wiener Schnitzel across from the Thrifties. Oh, yeah. Uh, and my dad had an engineering construction company called Design One. And my mom uh was a beautician, uh she uh she had a beauty shop right there. And then uh my dad folded, he was done with the construction, done with all that, and then my mom moved right over to Hillcrest in Niles, right by the post office, another beauty shop over there. So inevitably I spent a lot of my youth on Niles. Um better than being said I spent it on Union or Chester, I suppose, but I spent a lot of time on Niles, man. I wasn't hooking it at a young age. Did you go to Horseman? No. No, no. So yeah, we passed by Stella's all the time. Uh Copes was at a grocery store right there. Andre's um, you know, Pops Drive In. Pop's drive-in is what it was.

We took the high road and we took the hard road. We challenged ourselves. But, anyways, y'all, we had this little thing, you know, the four of us DJ'd at the Hard Rock this last Saturday. Saturday, Saturday night. Uh DJ'd at the Hard Rock this last Saturday night. And uh look, we love each other, but you know, also fuck everybody else, man. Fuck Myth, fuck Dre, fuck Babisita. I'm coming for all of you, motherfuckers. I am coming for you. I plan on destroying you. I'm coming for you. I plan on making you rethink your life as a DJ.

We like to push each other, we like to get the best out of each other. So uh I started talking shit, and then everybody else started talking shit and you know, fun, everything else. And I told everybody uh, you know, uh they were gonna need some mental and emotional and psychological help after I destroyed them on Saturday. And I I overall, I'll be completely thousand percent honest, I was not thrilled with my set. Um, but overall, the entire night was amazing. Was an amazing event, was an amazing night. Dre opened and warmed everybody up. Uh, you know, while he might not have had the biggest dance floor, uh, he had everybody in that marketplace nodding. He had everybody singing along, he had everybody drinking, feeling good, in their feelings, everything else, doing what the warm-up guy does, man. And he still had a dance floor at the end of his set. So, hey, big ups, Dre. You did a great job. Your transitions were a lot cleaner, a lot nicer, a lot better. You're doing pretty good, brother. He's growing. Um I mean, light years, light years ahead of eight months ago at the Belvidere.

So I was like, man, I'm sure glad I didn't dog this motherfucker out or anything, man. Like, who the fuck are you looking at, homie? It's brother, brother, brother. You guys are brothers? SPEAKER_13Well, we have all had pretty good mixes, you know, and uh the vibe was good. That Mexican vibe was.
SPEAKER_07Oh, she had it, yeah. She had it, man. What is she disappearing? I don't know. She's probably over there dealing with the girls or something. She she looked at her phone and she walked outside, so she might be on the phone or something. But yeah, is what Lawrence is referring to is Bebecita Marion. She uh hit a whole bunch of Tejanosima, some cumbia, some bandas, all kinds of shit, some regathon. And she had that fucking place popping. Yes, she did. I was jealous. And when she did that, I'm I I told Lawrence, I told, I told Dre, I say, Yeah, we're in danger, man. We are in danger, man. Because to follow that up, it's one thing to, you know, we're following myth up or you know, Slice, or somebody that we greatly respect, or somebody that's uh uh, you know, a professor on these turntables, right? But then after she does that shit, and she's new to this shit too, man, she's rocking the entire hard rock casino. People are coming over from uh playing games just to come over and dance, right? Like she she packed that shit in there, man. They were dancing. It was it was crazy, crazy vibe. So yeah, Dre opened uh with some oldies, some funk, some old hip-hop, some some classic bangers that aren't really played very often, um, very frequently. Then Marion jumped on with the Tajano y más, the banda, the cumbias, the regatón, all the Spanish stuff. Really had people going. Um, Myth jumped on with all the club hits, all the club bangers, all the one of my favorite songs.

SPEAKER_05I put a lot of prep work into my set. I wanted to make sure that I did a good opening set, but also didn't cut into your guys' playtime, but still play some good hits.

SPEAKER_05That's kind of what I went with. And I won't for some reason I wanted to play full force because the lead singer died. I'm like, I want to get it in there. Yeah, paying homage. Yeah. But I think you guys all did really good too. It may not all have been our best sets, but I think every time that we get together and do it, it just builds.
SPEAKER_07It has, man. This is the third time that we've all DJ'd together.

SPEAKER_07And all three nights have progressively gotten better in one form or another, whether it's through preparation, uh, whether it's through attendance, whether it's through vibe, whether it's through song selection, mixing, whatever it may be. It's grown every time. It really has. It's been uh it's been a nice little journey, and uh we got one more person to ask, man. We know him. Y'all know him, y'all know that guy. DJ Myth, man. What how did you feel about Saturday, man?
SPEAKER_02I thought it was great overall. Yeah, it was all it was all it was great. Everybody had a great set. You had a better set.

She had people that were on the dance floor actually recording her while they were like they like they were like you were a caged animal. Yeah, like they ain't never seen one of you before. How To Start A Crowd Blind
SPEAKER_07to certain songs and things of that. You're French, you're you're you're wrong. You gotta figure it out. And and so I'm gonna ask this question. Um, you're going in blind, y'all go into an event completely blind, don't know a whole lot about it. They hired you, they said, hey, I want you to do something. Now, normally, look, we all do our homework, and hey, what are you looking for? What's our what's our demographic? What's our age? What's what's all of these items, you know, so I can kind of but if you're going in blindfolded, give me three songs, you go in blindfolded, give me three songs that are the first three songs that you play to try to figure out what is gonna rock this crowd. Anybody?
SPEAKER_09No, you go I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Um probably stick to the classics, you know. Maybe start off with Baby Got Back and See Where It Goes, but then he could probably mix it into song, paper, push it, maybe. And then if you want to give him something newer, you know, go with Full Rider hello, you know, pitches all three to see what you get.
SPEAKER_07So I think I think for me personally, I'm gonna throw uh funk. Something funk. Like it might be Curtis Mayfield, it might be Stevie, it could be uh you know who it's probably gonna be. Um I can't even think of the name right. Frankie Beverly Mays. Oh yeah. I'll probably throw that one out there. Um then I'm gonna go uh oldies, maybe some Zappin' Roger or something. You know, those are kind of close, funkin' oldies, they're kind of close, so I don't'm not giving myself a whole lot of room there to determine actually who it is that that I'm playing for. And then I think I'm gonna go I hate I I'm gonna go I'm gonna go P Funk or LA, uh, you know, Los Angeles, uh Snoop, uh, Warren, Nate, uh somewhere around those. I'm gonna try to hit those three first. Uh I guess worst case, uh, I'll throw in cumbia or something as the fourth option to see if that crowd is gonna be the one that sparks or not. Our little backyard that we take a lot of pride in, put a lot of work into it, try to make it beautiful and nice and cozy. Uh we're putting on an event Sunday. It's an invite-only event. And yeah, we were moving in. I had the Jeep with the trailer on the back of it, and I needed to put and I couldn't pull the trailer into the driveway because of the slope. Okay. It won't make it. And it was it was way down, it was packed down. And so I nicely went over to the neighbors, rang their doorbell, said, Hey, um, you know, we're moving in over here. I was wondering if somebody could move this vehicle that's in the front right here.

Underrated Skills EQ Stems Clean Mixing

SPEAKER_07Wonderful evening. Um what is the most underrated DJ skill? Underrated. What's the the most underrated? It could be the smallest thing. For me, for me, I'm gonna say EQ and trim. It's normalization of your audio and making sure that your your track and understanding that not all tracks are are mastered or the volume is not always the same. And you have to be aware of that. You have to have an ear. And if you're mixing in that next song, you might have to hit that trim up a little bit.

SPEAKER_07Right? You it might need to come up a little bit. Um, and I for me it's the audio. For me, it's the trim, it's the EQs. Hey, maybe this this song is a little low on the bass. I'm gonna bring some more bass in. I'm gonna help it out a little bit to even it out. What is your guys' most underrated skill that a DJ has that you have noticed in somebody or that you like or that you have a great appreciation for? Just clean mixing. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Just clean mixing, not not doing too much.
SPEAKER_07Is is that a sad thing at this day and age, though? Is it a sad thing that uh it it at this day and age that we have to celebrate clean mixing in the DJ community? Because it should be a core component, right? It should be on the foundation, it should be at the very we we should all be able to at least blend two tracks.
SPEAKER_02Exactly. Now, these days everybody's slamming. Yeah, dropping on the one. Yeah, it's like bring back the mixing. Like bring back what DJing is. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05So I hate all that slamming shit. Yeah. Using stems properly.
SPEAKER_07That's a wonderful tool. And I I I've been I've been doing it more because of this guy right here, Myth, man. Myth utilizes stems and everything else. Something else that I I I started paying attention to or noticing, especially in class with chalk, man, and and this is on the more of the house level, right? The house level, you're you're you're doing a long mix for like 16, 24, 32 bars, right? You're blending songs for a long time. Yeah. It's not your typical drop-on-the-one hip-hop or four-bar or eight-bar hip-hop. It's 32 bars, 32 counts that we're transitioning slowly. We're introducing some mids, we're taking out some highs. Yeah. We're doing a low pass, high pass filter. We're manipulating, we're pulling volume out of one, bringing it back up so they can hear that other one. You know, all those components, man. Um, and I like that. I like all of the transition. I wish we could do it more within hip-hop, right? I mean, I wish we could do a 32-bar transition in hip-hop almost. Um, because we're limited to either four or eight generally, unless there's a loop, right? Set up a loop, right? Set up a loop. But uh, I feel like hip hop, I'm gonna I'm gonna go through, I'm gonna tell you my method. You guys already know it, you guys have already seen it, you guys have already heard it. You know, I have a track playing, I I listen to the headphones, bring in the next track, listen to it, make sure it's beat matched, whatever, make sure BPM's the same, make sure I'm somewhat in key. I do like to try to mix in key somewhat, you know, slowly bring that track in, base swap, right? And then I will apply like a reverb to the old track at 50% at 10 or 11 o'clock reverb, and I'll I'll EQ them out, or I'll high pass it out, or I'll volume it out, or I'll echo it out and not use the reverb, right? I feel like there's a lot of opportunity to use a lot of other methods as far as mixing into hip-hop, and whether that's starting with the low pass filter activated when you scratch in the next song and with the bass off, and you have two components to to to manipulate. Um what are your guys' thoughts and what are you guys' methods on mixing hip-hop versus house?
SPEAKER_15House is just fun to mix. Yeah. I mean, it's just a lot of stuff you can do with that.

SPEAKER_15And hip hop, I mean, you got you can do a lot of stuff with that. It's just you gotta know what you're doing.

SPEAKER_06No, no. I don't do a lot of stims. Like all of my mixing right now is EQ mixing.

SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah. I used to do a lot of that back when I was at Randolph's and Brics and stuff, and then when the STEMs came out, which is like a shortcut, and I just found it easier. Yeah, yeah, it's a little bit easier. Yeah. And I just found it like just you can do more with stims. So that's why I'm so comfortable with stims. Yeah.
SPEAKER_07I feel like are you a big utilizer slice of stems now? Uh yeah, I'm I'm getting there. All right. All right. Is that your preferred mixing method? Is that your preferred transitional? What what's what's if if you had a signature, right? We all have a signature, we all have a certain way we do things in a hey, that sounds like Gordy B's DJing. Yeah. That sounds like slice is DJing. What is your 90% of the time, what is your transition look like?
SPEAKER_15I mostly just like I'll cut cut it first and then just let it ride after that. Okay. And then that's basically it. Jump on doubles or whatever.

SPEAKER_10I just do like I beat match and then I kind of bring it in slowly, and then I just kind of do bass swap and then my mids and my mids and highs and come out. That's pretty much it.
SPEAKER_02You guys have similar mixes every time you hear when I hear you. I'm in a course, but yeah.
SPEAKER_10I mean he's been trying to teach me some other other things.
SPEAKER_07I've been trying to teach her some extra things, you know, some flair. Hey, throw some reverb in there, throw a flanger effect on there, you know, do something, spin out, echo out, do something, you know. So it's not the same transition every single time, every single song. Yeah. You know, little flavor, little, little differentiating factor in there. Yeah.
SPEAKER_10But yeah, I'm pretty much do what you do. But I don't think people use looping enough either.
SPEAKER_07I love easy looping.
SPEAKER_10I know you can do. Yeah. But um, and that's something we're learning right now.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, we learned a lot of looping the last few weeks at Beat Junkies, and we started using it within our vinyl final and everything else that we had to do. And it's something that I'm looking at using and exploring more within my mixes and within my sets. But I also feel like uh looping, unless you're myth or slice or chalk or sea mines, unless you're super comfortable and super fast, right? And and super, I've heard this song a million times. I know that at about 2:30, I can create a loop right here, right? And that you can do that on the fly while this song is playing. Uh instant doubles, get the song loaded on the other one, find where you want to set the loop, set the loop so it applies to the one that's actually playing, activate the loop on that side, let it loop, and then load the next song onto the other deck. You have to be very quick with it. Yeah, right. And and and I think I'm there. I think I can probably do it, but I think initially I won't be doing it so much on the fly. It'll probably be pre-premeditated, right? Yeah, like I'm like someday I might pick like six songs to do a little word play on. There you go. Where I'll set up a loop and I'll scratch in a word play or whatever and then let it take over, right? With stems and shit like that, just to try to do something different. I don't want to fuck up too bad since we're gonna be on camera and posting this shit to YouTube, man. And these folks out there be clowning Bakers Hill DJs, man.
SPEAKER_02Like I you know what? After watching a few of these videos, you know, they they do mess up a lot. They do. Yeah, yeah, they did mess up a lot.

Yeah, but if we fuck up a pad and and load a song on top of a song that's playing, like that's gonna suck, man. That's gonna be embarrassing. So when when I'm DJing on Sunday, I'm gonna be very, I hate to say very careful, but I'm gonna I'm gonna look at the screen and I'm gonna look at my controller three times to see which one has the volume level up before I load the track onto the one that has the volume down, right?

SPEAKER_07Eventually, and it sounds funny because we have the technology that we have, we have the curated library that we have, but eventually I do want to do an all-vinyl set. Yeah. I do. So I I I mean, I don't know if it's gonna be next month or in three months, but uh uh, you know, we'll probably have a vinyl set out back with the most dope sessions and uh try to elevate a little bit more, try to bring something. And or look, I I'm really hoping that this most dope sessions pops off a little bit. Um and it becomes a hub. It becomes a a central, a central place that that people see on YouTube and actually want to come out and and hang out and perform and and do it. Yeah, right. Grow it and grow it. Like, like no problem, we can easily get Chalk and Celos and Flip Flop and you know some of these guys here and you know if I'm raised with all his vinyls. Yes, I said like I ain't bringing vinyls.

Uh about you know, mine was the the fire, the buttons are on fire, they're hot, I'm gonna fucking touch them and act like I'm fucking pulling off and doing something. I ain't doing shit. I think one of my other biggest, biggest things that I hate is is uh these DJs on social media uh that are constantly posting about, you know, I started on vinyl, I did this, I did that, uh, you know, and like like almost dogging out younger DJs or newer DJs that A didn't start out that way, A, B haven't explored that like we have, and we've been going backwards, right? We started digitally, now we're going back to analog for the hell of it, right? You know, just for the the love of DJing and all of that. But something that I hate is is a a lot of this. Uh I I I don't I want to I hate to say a superiority complex because these DJs that started on vinyl, they absolutely have skills that these newer digital vinyls don't have. Yeah, they have ears, yeah, they have ears. They they can beat match without a counter in front of them, telling them what song, what BPM this song is, right? Like it was a different thing, and we've got to experience it now too. Um, but I just hate, you know, the anti-technology, I guess, right? I love it. I love it. The anti-technology. No, no, I love the technology. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And it's like, look, uh, and the same thing we talked about briefly last week, I think you know, Dr. Dre talking about AI and AI tools and everything else. He said the only people that are afraid of AI are the people that aren't creative, that aren't going to be using it creatively as a tool, right? Uh um, and and I I I somewhat agree with that. There are artists definitely on the other side that I'm huge fans of that hate AI, right? Um, but I I tend to think I side with Dre on the fact that AI is another tool and something that we can use to manipulate, like the drum, the drum machine. Nobody wanted to accept that the drum machine, you know, early on and and Serato and Serato Live and uh, you know, all of these these technological advances that have come, right? Uh we're talking about, you know, it at one point in time, 40 years ago, techniques was a new technology. Yeah, that that turntable was a new piece of technology 40 years ago. I mean, if you want to get down to the raw of it, then you can go back to an old school turntable with a big old megaphone on it. And you know, like how far are we gonna go back before we we stop and say, okay, well, everything is gonna constantly change. Um, but that doesn't mean that we can't pay homage or or you know go back to our roots and go back to the beginning and and show appreciation for the people that did it before us. Yeah, absolutely. These people that did it before us, like I said, they have ears, they they hear, they can hear everything, they can hear everything. We're in beat junkies, man. And Marion laughs at me. I don't know if I should say this. I'm not gonna go. You already went down that road. There's some students there that don't beat match very well. And there's there's there's uh um uh practices that we do that we all have to drop out loud. So first Chalk will play something up at the front, and and he'll say, Okay, drop in on four, right? So we'll listen to it. We have our own track, he has his own track. We don't know what BPM his track is, we have no idea. Yeah, so we we have our track loaded, we scratch in in our headphones, not out loud. We hear it, we advance it, we retard it, we you know, we pitch control it, we do whatever, we figure it out, yeah. And then we kill it, we get back to the top of the record, and it's time to drop again. This time we drop out loud. So rick ricket rick ricket drop, right? Oh my god, man. Oh, train wreck, shoes in the dryer, horses galloping, buffalo stampeding, like and for me I have like some Asperger's or something, like I'm I'm a little off, and and I get sensory overload, and I can I hear uh eight other fucking beats going, some of them that match mine, some of them that don't match mine.

And and and and I'm thinking about it, and I'm thinking about Chalk, and I'm thinking about flip-flop, and I'm thinking about Celos and the amazing DJs that they are, the 30, 40 years in the game, whatever it may be. Yeah, and they have to fucking listen to this shit every week.
SPEAKER_10Crazy how their ear is like they literally walk by our station and they know that we're off.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, you know it. They walk by all nine stations and they'll walk by and they'll look at me, cool, or they'll say, Speed it up, speed it up, yeah, take it down, whatever, you're off a little bit. And and to the to the to the layman, sometimes you don't even hear it yourself. I was like, no, I I feel like I'm right on beat. But it's just it's just that little hair that's after it, or that little hair that's before it, and it's not perfectly on. Then just just for the fact that it's vinyl, um, the BPMs fluctuate plus or minus 0.2, 0.3, sometimes the speed, you know. You know, so you'll you'll you'll twist the hair. Yeah, tap it. Yeah, tap it or twist the spindle or whatever. Yeah, like like all kinds of methods to do it. Um, but yeah, it's crazy, man, because uh that's why I have the utmost respect for the OGs in the game with the ears that they had, the lack of technology, the lack of beat matching, the lack of BPM display, the lack of everything. They pull a record out, they put it on there, and and they have to match it. They have to mix it. Yeah, and they have to do it quickly enough. You get the first song playing, bum. You get the second song playing, and then you start playing with it. You're playing with it the whole time until you feel you have it beat matched, right? And then you get it back to the top, wait for your chorus or whatever, mix in, and then even then, sometimes you gotta baby it. Yeah, sometimes you you nudge it, you know, you're nudging, you're doing your main you're managing it the whole time. Yeah. Um, so yeah, there was a whole lot of skill that has been taken out.
SPEAKER_15Yeah, it's still there. Yeah. But I mean, only the older people have it, I guess, the older DJs. Yeah. But um, like my boy Um Turbo, every record he had every every speed on his fucking record. He had a label on it. All right. Yeah. Me, I'd do what you you said. Put it on it, that's it. Listen to it. Yeah.

SPEAKER_15And then we just have markers, you know, on the record. You know, that's it. We have to put a marker in the middle of the hole because it's too wide, because it would skip. Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_07And um so I always see, I always see, well, I don't always see, but I know DJs will get a napkin and they'll they'll stick it on there, and then they'll push the record down on it because the hole of the record sometimes is a wide napkin and it'll cause the needle to skip or it'll cause whatever, you know.
SPEAKER_15That's what I'm talking about. We always uh we always had mixed tapes around, so we always had like the label. Yeah, the label is sticking on there and it's flat right through it, and yeah, it's tight.
SPEAKER_07And it tightens it up.
SPEAKER_15Yeah, using labels for the markers and everything. Yeah. Yeah. Because man, I should do it pretty fast on the radio, and it's you know, it's tough. Yeah. It's like riding a bike to me. You know, I did it all over real fast.

Y'all didn't see me flip myth off man because this motherfucker just dropping shit man I'm gonna be on radio at station one radio station two radio station three I'm gonna be at this location I'm gonna be visiting as a guest at these two locations uh I'm the most popular fucking DJ here not see that my movie drops next week now just get oh I forgot we forgot to shout out the dude in the wheelchair oh man yeah we have to we have to it's not too late he was popping willies and going off man there was a dude at the marketplace like it's not the disabled kid that I was talking about disabled kid goes in there with his family and uh you know I don't know if he's nonverbal or anything but I'm wondering his mom tries to make the best for him I shook his hand a couple times tried to make him feel welcome and loved and appreciated and and everything else um for whatever that's worth you know I'm just gee DJ Gordy B not a big deal right but there was another gentleman all torso yeah he was all torso he I don't even know if he had pelvic I don't know if he had the lower pelvic I think he just ribs and up he had no lower body extremities um and uh this cat was in a wheelchair on the motherfucking dance floor getting it getting it getting booties dropped on him and all kinds of shit man I was so happy for this cat A anytime somebody that's disabled in a wheelchair or anything else can make it to the dance floor and your dumbass can't I I got I got uh I got major respect for him right like and when I tell y'all to get on the dance floor you can just come out to the dance floor and sway and you know mingle and drink and do whatever you don't have to like you know pop and lock and break dance and do everything else you know one two just count one two one two move your feet one two one two but yeah this cat in the wheelchair man tell me Dre he he was the craziest dancer on that floor he was hitting full spins and circles yeah two elves yeah somebody called him Pac Man I don't know who did they called him Pac-Man it was crazy because he was eating ass that was crazy he had just so much ass in his face constantly all night just bouncing on him he had more game than almost all the dudes there I think and he had no lower extremities but anyways y'all most dope most dope podcast most dope sessions we love you guys we appreciate your time this one's another long one hour and 45 minutes uh so it's a long one y'all you're gonna have to take multiple breaks and multiple lunches to get through it unless you just crank it out on a two hour road trip somewhere uh thank you guys DJ Myth thank you DJ Slice appreciate you brother DJ Dre love you man babe you're my world we'll catch y'all on the next one
